The James Cumine Parkinson Letters

Letter 330

Derwent Lighthouse,
October 15th 1885
My dear Mother,

Yours of 27th August just received and we are glad to hear that you are all well. Sam’s photo came safely and he looks well. It is not chilblains that are the matter with Maria it is a movable lump between the wrist and middle finger. I fancy it has come through a strain as Annie had the same and it has gone away painted with iodine, Our new house will be finished in about 4 weeks. It will be grand and if you were as young as when I saw you last you should have the best room in it as you remember you used to say, would I not give you the arm chair in the corner when I got to be a man. Well I have got the use of the house and "I suppose that is all anyone can say" but I am afraid that the journey would be too much for you altho 7 weeks does it now, but you shall have the photo as soon as it is finished. I guess it will take something for furniture. I saw Dr Sam’s name in the W.N. as being at the "Quaker settlement". We hope to have Willy and George at home the beginning of the month although they have had a good spell at school. We had to bring Maria home as she was not well so she is staying on the Arm with the schoolmistress for the remainder of the time. This season has been exceptionally fine but cold. All our youngsters are "breaking out" as if they lived on oat meal but it is better out than in.

I ought to have my photo taken while I am writing. Pussy has taken her seat on my shoulder and is very comfortable blinking at the lamp! This will be a fine season for fruit as there has been a good fall of rain through the winter.

Tas is a wonderful child for imitation I must get his photo taken a. la. Grandma with spectacles. He is very like what Maria was. So with love from all to Grandma and hoping this will find you well and love to sisters and brothers and if any of them like to take a trip out here I can accommodate them free gratis and with kind remembrances to Joe and Sophy.

I remain dear Mother,

Ever your affectionate son,

James C. Parkinson.

19 years married the 8th of this month and no black eyes yet.
