The James Cumine Parkinson Letters |
Letter 236Iron Pot December 18th 1877 My dear Mother I was very much relieved by your last letter to hear that you were so much better and hope that you may soon be restored to health and strength again but I was very much grieved that poor Willy was so ill and shall feel very uneasy until I get your next letter which I hope will bring tidings of his recovery for which we most earnestly pray. I received the sketch of the old church and am much obliged to Joe for a reminder of of "Auld Lang’s Syne". I told you in my last that I went up to town and spent a fortnight there but the weather was very stormy. I saw Mr Matthews and thanked him for his troubles and bringing the box, and also am much obliged for all the pretty things it contained. I was sorry that I had not something to send back with him but perhaps in a little time will be able to get you some more curiosities. I am glad to hear that the Wattle seed came up as they are an ornamental tree, and the bark is useful in tanning. You must be careful in transplanting. I will send you some of the seed of the Gum "Eucalyptus" which grows very rapidly and is a great disinfectant in unhealthy places. Chris is laid up as present, I think she got cold coming down but I hope will soon be about again. All the children are well and baby, he promises to have red hair. We will send you his likeness sometime soon. This has been a windy and dry season and all sorts of vegetables are very scarce. But please God if I am spared to next summer we will have plenty ourselves. Chris and children desire me to thank Grandma and Aunts for all the nice things. I am glad that George is so pleasantly situated and hope he may be very useful in his new sphere of labour. We expect Mrs Upton down shortly which will be pleasant as there is no female but Chris on the rock at present. Hoping soon to hear a more favourable report of dear Willy’s health and with love from all to sisters and brothers. I remain dear mother ever your affect son James C Parkinson PS Did you get a letter enclosed for Aunt E Decr 21st. Mrs Upton has come down and Chris is rather better and I hope will soon be all right again and hoping to hear good news in your next. |
