The James Cumine Parkinson Letters

Letter 101

Ship Martaban
Falmouth
June 1862
Dear Mother,

I suppose you had nearly given up of seeing me again but I am glad to be able to inform you that we have arrived safe so far after a very long and weary passage from the Mauritius of nearly four months. I will tell you when we are going to discharge as soon as I can but I hope it will be L.pool.

This voyage has given me a regular sickening of the sea and I intend as soon as I have seen you to be off to Australia which is a hundred times better than this sort of life. I will have a nice little sum when I am payed off and I fancy there is little fear of it going foolishly. There is a young man who joined us in Point de Galle on board here who has been a long time in Australia and he intends after he has seen his friends to go with me but I hope soon to be able to tell you all. If the ship goes to L.pool if Kate wishes she might come over and I will pay her expenses.

Yours,

James C. Parkinson

Love to all

PS We had a son of Mr Rutherford of Carlingford, Robert Barkly, passenger from the Mauritius, who died on board 17th March. I have just received 2 letters from you and am very glad to hear that you are all well.
