The James Cumine Parkinson Letters

Letter 80

Bendigo,
August 10th 1858
Dear Willy,

(WRITTEN ON NEWSLETTER OF AUSTRALASIA)

I have just received Mamma’s and Sister’s letters dated May 14th and Christian Messenger and am glad to see by the printed form that you and brothers hold such a good position in the school. You should pay every attention to your English education, as you intend to devote yourself to business, as there is nothing so useful nowadays and as you advance you should apply yourself to gain a thorough knowledge of the modern languages such as French, German, Spanish, Italian etc. as they would be of great use to you after you have passed sometime in an office, as a good foreign correspondent can always command a good salary. I have been enquiring where it would be best for you to gain a thorough knowledge of business and have heard that Mulhollands is about the best as their business is extensive and person is better among strangers than friends as you will rise by merit which is better than favour. I mean with regards to your Uncle E, but perhaps he would interest himself to get you placed there or in some other extensive firm, and when you are capable of being placed then carefully avoid all companions that would lead you into any sinful enjoyments, but endeavour in your spare time to improve yourself in all useful knowledge and you will fine more real satisfaction in the consciousness that you are in the path of duty. You should also try and assist your younger brothers as much as possible in their lessons and watch over them in their conduct, as I am so far away and therefore incapable of it and I am afraid that it will be some time yet ere I have the pleasure of seeing you all. As yet we have not yet got anything payable altho’ the parties who have the claim next but one have got upwards of £6000 out of it but I am not disheartened but must only ‘Try again’ but I must have a look at you soon, lucky or unlucky. Job had a vast deal of patience, but we are not told that ever he was a Quartz Reefer?. I hope you will have received my likeness before this reaches you as I sent it last mail. Give my Love to Mamma, Sisters and Brothers. Also remember me to Drs Aicken, Aunt E, Miss Lascelles and believe me ever your affect brother,

James C. Parkinson.
