The Lascelles Letters

Letter 6

Limerick George’s St
June 20th 1837

My dear Lucy,

I had the pleasure of your letter from Dublin and though you have not given your address, yet as I think the Dromcondra road is somewhere near Dublin I will send this letter on chance without knowing the number of your house. Pray write to me as soon as possible after you receive this, when your have executed the commission you will find below. I am truly glad to hear you have arrived safe with your friend Miss Hughes, and hope the change of air, and renewal of society with your former acquaintances will conduce to the restoration of your health. As to Mr Atkinson and Dennis Mullen not paying your rent. I would advise your applying to Mr Gracey or some other respectable attorney in Down to write to them, and threaten them with any proceeding by Law against them, unless they pay their present arrears, and promise to be more punctual in future. I find myself so much better in health since I came to Limerick that I intend to make arrangements to return there next Winter, and I am so very happy in my clerical connection with Mr Gerahty that I shall be enabled to absent myself from Kirkcubbin with more peace of mind. I have in the mean time some business in Dublin which may engage me for two or three weeks, and imagine that we shall leave this place in about a month - go from there to Belfast where I shall be detained perhaps a fortnight. I will be extremely obliged if you will look out for lodgings for me in some central part of the city - not in Sackville Street, for that would be too expensive - but in Abbey St., Mary or Henry Street or Marlborough St - Grafton St. or somewhere about there. We shall want a front and back drawing room, three bed rooms, or one single and one double bedded room - use of the kitchen and a woman servant to dress the meat and attend. We will bring a man servant with us. Mr and Mrs Hodder propose to come as far as Dublin to escort us - we wish to know the terms we can get the lodgings for and request that you undertake this trouble and when you have obtained satisfactory information - write to me without delay. You will take the lodgings by the week and I hope that your visit to your friend may detain you until our trip to town takes place. Mrs Lascelles, Mr and Mrs Hotter, and the girls join in affect regards to you and believe me my dear Lucy,

Yours affectly

F.E. Lascelles
