The Lascelles Letters

Letter 2

Parsonage, Kirkcubbin
May 5th 1836

My dear Lucy,

The last time I wrote to you I was very much engaged with business relative to Br Rowel Lascelles, and others as well as settling with my affairs in which I have not yet been assisted by Government, but hope that in the course of the present session something will be done to set the matter at rest - we were at Belfast lately for some days, and Elizabeth and Mrs Lascelles went to a Ball in Carrickfergus, while Sophy and I remained at the Donegal Arms, until their return about 4 o clock. Sophy desires me to tell you that she has been a good deal employed, or would have written to you, but that she will write to you very soon. Miss Elizebeth left us on Thursday evening last to pay a visit to her sister Mr Hodder who wrote to us to request we would spare her for some time, and she arrived at Limerick on Sunday morning by seven o clock to the surprise of the who did not expect so prompt and arrival - I hope your tenant in Killough had thought better of fulfilling his engagement with you in a fair and equitable manner, and that our friend W Parkinson has made use of his influence with him to do so - I beg to be remembered kindly to him Mrs Parkinson and Mrs Johnston. I think I heard a rumour that Miss Auckinleck intends to visit us for a week accompanied by your Ladyship. You can let me know when we are to expect you. Mrs Lascelles will go to Portaferry to meet you - I will be obliged to you to send to, or call on Mr Hugh Vanny, at Crolly’s Quarter, and on his cousin to tell them to come here with their rents and arrears on Tuesday next the 10th instant or someday after during the week - I hope Mr Atchinson, and Miss McMullen and Nelson pay you their dues punctually - Mrs Lascelles and Sophy unite with me in affect regards to you and believe me, my dear Lucy, your affect.

F.E. Lascelles.
