The Lascelles Letters |
Letter 1
Belfast,
We will be glad to see you if possible, on Saturday morning the 17th inst. or Friday 16th should the Down Coach not travel on Saturday - as Miss Auchinleck is here now and intends to go to Viandstown the day before Christmas to spend some time with her sister and Frances has come over from Plymouth on leave of absence and does not know how soon he will be recalled on these accounts we wish you to come a week sooner than you intended as they will be both glad to see you there is thirty pounds of rent due me which I hope Wm. MacGrievy will make the tenants either bring to Belfast or pay you and you can take charge of it until I see you here. Let me know by return of post what day I may expect you; Private I was so confused with the tenants yesterday. I believe I forgot to put my father’s age in the inscription on the tomb stone. Let it be thus. "Cornelius Lascelles Esquire, Son of Francis Lascelles Esquire, departed this life May 28th 1797, aged 36 years. He lived beloved and die universally lamented" There are many other inscriptions necessary but I suppose there is not room on the stone for them - Rowley Lascelles Esq. died February 2nds 1797 W Frances Trotter wife of William Trotter of Downpatrick Esq. died in either 1808 or 1809 - Miss Cumine knows. However, if the lines of my father can be engraven the rest can be done again. I am my dear Lucy yours affectly F.E. Lascelles |
