Authors and Contributors

Dundrum Castle: The castle was captured by King John in 1210 and and returned to Hugh de Lacy when he regained his Earldom in 1226.The Maginnis family seized Dundrum in the late fourteenth century and held it intermittently until expelled by Lord Mountjoy in 1601. It was made over to Lord Cromwell in 1605 and sold to Sir Francis Blundell in 1636. The Maginnis family retrieved it in 1642, but later lost it to the Parliamentarians, who dismantled it in 1652.After 1660 the Blundells returned and built a gabled L-shaped mansion in the south-west corner of the outer bailey. This dwelling was ruined by the time the property passed to the second Marquess of Downshire in the early nineteenth century.  Denvirs Hotel:It is not known precisely when the hotel was built but in 1642 it was in the possession of John and Ann Macgreevy. John had been a soldier in the army of Charles I and accepted it as part recompense for non-payment of wages. It was a centre for the United Irishmen in the 1790s. A coaching inn from the early 1800s, it has been the centre of social activity in the town ever since, apart from a brief period in the early 1820s. A recent renovation has revealed evidence of a seventeenth century structure. On his reform programme, Daniel O'Connell addressed a large crowd from one of its upstairs windows. There is a tradition the cobbled area in front of the hotel, behind the line of the footpath, was a debtor's sanctuary. Photo Pat Devlin CLICK FOR LARGER PICTURE
